Open Letter to Delinquent Borrowers of Sudent Loans

Dions Eyes

Dear Borrower,

Please take a look at the eyes above:

These are the eyes of Dion, a 15-year-old boy of Castle Bruce (name and location changed to protect his identity). Dion has the ambition of becoming a medical doctor. In fact, he has already decided on his specialisation. He wants to be a paediatrician, providing medical services to children.

Dion plans after completing his examinations in 2014, to obtain a student's loan from the AID Bank to pursue his medical studies. His mother is a household helper, his father is a farmer, and they would not be able to finance his studies.

But Dion's plans may not materialise because you have not met your loan repayment obligations to the Bank. This would mean that the Bank would not have enough funding to provide a loan to Dion.

We have tried to contact you to discuss your loan arrears for months and in a number of cases for years without any success. You may be experiencing financial difficulties and are unable to meet your loan repayment obligations. However, please, contact us and let us discuss your situation. We may be able to work out some arrangement with you, such as minimum monthly payments, or restructure your loan until you get back on your feet.

We are also aware that you could be among the vast number of borrowers who are indeed working and are in good paying jobs in both Dominica and overseas.

However, you have deliberately and consciously decided not to honour your obligations to the AID Bank whose loan allowed you to obtain a better paying job to improve the quality of life for yourself and your family.

We cannot frustrate Dion's plans and you should not!

As a result, we have identified for you three options as follows:

  • 1. Contact the AID Bank at the earliest opportunity if you are having a difficulty and let us discuss how we can restructure your loan.
  • 2. Come in or send payments through wire transfer or cheques to clear up the arrears on your loan to make it current and put in place arrangements to keep it current.
  • Please note that in order to facilitate you we now accept payments by debit or credit card.
  • 3. Do nothing and continue being a delinquent borrower.

Should you decide, unfortunately on option 3, we will give you forty (40) days from the date of this letter to come out of the wilderness of delinquency failing which be taking the following actions:

  • a) We will initiate or accelerate legal action against you through the Courts in order for the Bank to recover its loan.
  • This could result in the sale of your relatives’ property, which collateralised the loan.,p>

  • b) We will begin to publish your name and photograph in the local newspapers, Dominican news websites, social networking websites, the Bank's own website and other selected media in an attempt to determine your whereabouts.

This could prove embarrassing to you among your co-workers, employers, and friends, fellow church members - anywhere you are in the world and could seriously affect your credit rating.

You have refused to contact us despite all our attempts; we cannot find you; so we are forced to resort to all means to try to find you.

In deciding on the option you take, please have one other look at the eyes of Dion and ask yourself "Will I be the one to prevent Dion from realising his ambition and dream of becoming a doctor?"

We eagerly look forward to hearing from you at soonest.

Please disregard this letter if you have cleared your arrears or contacted us before receiving it.

Yours sincerely,

The AID Bank
