Adopt-A-Road Project

On September 28, 2007 the Dominica Agricultural Industrial Development Bank signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Government of Dominica for the maintenance of the newly designed Goodwill road, dubbed the “Adopt-A-Road Project. The following are remarks made at that signing ceremony;

I am pleased to be with you at this official signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding between the DAIDB and the Government of Dominica towards the enhancement and beautification of the Goodwill Road Highway. We look forward to a fruitful relationship with the Ministry of Public Works and Public Utilities in ensuring the fulfillment of this agreement.

The AID Bank wishes to commend the Government of the Commonwealth of Dominica on the construction of this highway. It has improved the efficiency and safety of vehicular traffic in the area. With its combination of generous sidewalks, planned greenery and the sea wall, it has certainly raised the standard of road works in the Roseau area and the island as a whole. We see it as complementary to the Roseau Bayfront development and part of an overall plan to bring our national environment into conformity with our nature island image.

As a good corporate citizen, the AID Bank takes great pleasure in being able to contribute towards improving the aesthetics of its surrounding environment. On behalf of the Board of Directors, Management and Staff of the Bank we wish to express our appreciation to the Government for this opportunity to contribute to development.

The Bank has already made investments towards the landscaping of the area and has also sought the involvement of other corporate citizens in the area for maintenance of the landscape. In that respect I wish to express gratitude to J.E. Nassief and the Springfield Trading Company for their contributions to date towards maintenance of the landscape. H. H.V. Whitchurch and Co. Ltd. Has also been making in-kind contributions in the form of regular cleaning of the area.

Now that the Bank is being formally authorized to carry out this function, we are appealing to other businesses in the area to be more forthcoming in making contributions towards the overall project. We do have plans to upgrade the level of the landscaping which now exists in order to make the area more attractive and we intend to share these plans with potential contributors.

We also making a fervent appeal for a new approach on the part of individual citizens in demonstrating a greater sense of national pride and maturity by respecting that the plants placed in such public areas belong to the public and not to individuals. Yes, one little plant does make a big difference. Such cooperation from the public will contribute significantly towards encouraging the Bank, other businesses in the area and indeed businesses in general to really make our environment a source of national pride and a tribute to God for His rich endownment of beauty to our land.
